The highest mountain at La Garganta is Peña Rodrigo at 1,266 metres.
As the story goes, the last king Rodrigo was defeated by the Moors in Cádiz in 711 AD. As the invasion pushed him and his remaining kingdom further and further north (to the borders of Galicia and Asturias which were never conquered by the Moors) it is said that he stood here, at the highest point, to lament his lost terrain.
In the Sierra Morena region of the estate, fields of limestome boulders can be found. These 'Pedrizas' have been formed by freeze-thaw erosion of the last ice age. To see an example please click here.
