This part of Scotland has some of the most dramatic landscape in the British Isles.
Foinavon - At a height of 915m Foinaven is the tallest peak on the estate and is said to be the most challenging climb in north west Scotland. It reality it comprises several peaks, Foinaven being not so much a single mountain as a long high ridge extending over more than five kilometers and taking in five individual summits. Any ascent of the ridge requires commitment and a full day (the easiest approach being from the north) whilst a full traverse is a major undertaking.
Ben Arkle – At 787m Arkle is awe-inspiring. Bend’Or’s fourth wife Anne named her beloved Arkle – a triple Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, and arguably the most successful steeplechaser of all time - after this same mountain. The walk to the top is dangerous, with steep drops and some very narrow paths.
Ben Stack - is 721m high, a complex and interesting structure, and looks wonderfully pointy when viewed from the north-west or south-east. There is a rocky plateau after the main climb, and a grassy cone at the top which makes it look somewhat like a traditional Norman motte and bailey castle. The summit ridge is divided in two, giving parallel ridges and a choice of several possible highest points. The mountain is very important from a geologist’s point of view, with beach stones found right at the summit and a fault line running along its main ridge.
