With such a small human population to impact on the natural environment, the wildlife in the Reay Forest has been able to prosper and is today wonderfully diverse. Many different species can be found here including the golden eagle, peregrine and dotterel, fish such as salmon and trout, and many different mammals including pine martens, otters, seals and of course red deer. The uplands similarly include sites of Alpine and Sub-Alpine heathland with many different species of grasses and moss
The estate includes a number of Sites of Special Scientific interest at Loch Stack, Foinaven, Laxford Moors, Stack Woods and Glencoul. There is also a National Scenic Area on the estate, whilst another site has been identified as a candidate for listing as a Special Area of Conservation. These definitions are increasingly important and demonstrate the effectiveness of the land management policies during the ownership of the area by the Grosvenor Estate.
